EDUCATION SKILLS

Corporate & Documentary Production

When filming this project I learned how important prep work is. Previous to this I had gone into filming a video with planning and contacting people the day before. Taking time to think of questions that would evoke answers that felt like a conversation, as opposed to yes or no answers, helped this documentary turn into something I felt told the story of The Gem Studio very well. Another important think I learned was how vital making call sheets are to a production. Sitting down and creating a document that had everybody's contact information and the specifics about the shoot made coordinating between myself, my crew and the business owner so much easier.

Cine 1

I learned a lot when my group and I filmed this project. I learned how important it is to make a shot list and a rough story board. This wasn't something we had done, and I feel as if it would have gone much more smoothly if we had. We also would have been able to get more coverage. We also worked together to build the set (to a certain extent) which was a new experience for me. I was able to learn how to light and key a green screen well enough that the editor was able to add in the backgrounds. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get in touch with our editor so I don't have a final edit. Finally, I learned that an 18k will absolutely, 100% melt a gel if you don't set it far away.

Motion Picture Essentials

This project presented a lot of challenges for me as it was my first time as a 1st AD. I learned how important it is to be aware of where the production is at and how to work with a director to make compromises so that we could stay on schedule. It was a delicate balance to get the shots we needed without going way over schedule. I also learned that it's important to know your limitations as far as what you want to shoot and how it correlates with the gear and crew you have. Certain desired shots were something that weren't doable with the time, budget and gear that we had.

The most important thing that this these projects taught me was how to use the gear I had available to take better photos. From reading through the manuals and the assignments themselves I was able to use the Canon Rebel T3i I had in ways that I wasn't able to previously. I was also able to learn how to more effectively light and frame a shot, which is something that will be valuable in a film career.
